Andreas Gehrke – Berlin

Bruchlandschaft

Andreas Gehrke’s new book “Berlin” is a portrait of a city that many of us thought we already knew. In an extraordinarily intimate way, his photographs reveal the radical upheavals, ruptures and new beginnings that have so uniquely shaped Germany’s capital.

Over the course of six years, Gehrke has created a pictorial portrait of a city that finds a balance between built and grown space, between undefined and meaningful places. He shows us the backsides, the spaces and details of monumental architecture side by side with everyday buildings and spontaneous vegetation. Gehrke’s Berlin is both a personal and artistic exploration of this multi-layered metropolis, which more or less accidentally became the city that it is.
